Family Owl Outing
(Ages 6 to Adults) 7 - 8:30 pm.
Discover the secret world of owls. Learn what makes these raptors excellent night predators with a presentation followed by a trail hike to hopefully hear or spot one of Huntley's resident owls. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
(Ages 5 to Adults) Noon - 2 pm.
What stories can skulls, spines and teeth tells us about the life of an animal? Can you identify an animal just by looking at its skull? Become a bone detective, use a magnifying glass and microscope to examine and touch real animal skulls and bones. Dissect an owl pellet and take home your own animal skeleton.
History Discussions at Huntley
(Adults) 3 - 4 pm.
Enjoy a refreshingly different view of history at Huntley Meadows Park as guest speakers join us each quarter for a lively discussion of varied topics. Then enjoy a tour of Historic Huntley.
(Adults) 1 - 2 pm.
What clues reveal the story of a house? What can architectural details and styles tell us? Examine photographs, artifacts and the buildings of Historic Huntley and see if you can resolve some of the enduring mysteries of this place.
(Adults) 7 - 8:30 pm.
Historic Huntley sits high upon a hill overlooking Hybla Valley and Huntley Meadows Park. It's a dramatic setting made all the more stunning by the setting sun. Join us after hours for a special tour and see the house in a different light. Light refreshments served afterward. Dress appropriately for the weather.
Symphony of Frogs
(Adults) 7:45 - 9:45 pm.
Discover Huntley's amphibian orchestra! Join a naturalist for an indoor discussion and a guided walk to listen for serenading frogs and toads! Learn the calls of a bull frog, southern leopard frog, green frog, tree frog, American toad and more.
Make Old Fashioned Toys at Huntley
(4 to Adults) 10 am - 11 am.
Make simple toys to take home and play games like those enjoyed by the children who once lived at Historic Huntley. Special children's house tour and scavenger hunt included.
Pollinator Power!Bats,Bees,Birds,& More
(6 to Adults) Noon - 2 pm.
Pollinators are vital to a healthy environment. What is pollination and why is it important? Identify native pollinators in the park and in your own backyard with an indoor discussion and a guided walk. Come explore the wonderful world of pollinators and find out how we can help. Make and take your own bee hotel. Seeds for two native plants important to pollinators will be provided for you to take home.
Twilight Boardwalk
(6 - Adults) 7:45-9:45 pm.
Join a park naturalist as they guide you through the forested paths to the wetland and experience the park as it transitions from day into night. Watch and listen for beavers, owls and other nocturnal residents.
(12 - Adults) 1 - 3 pm.
Join park naturalist and artist Margaret Wohler for a hike focusing on birds and learn sketching techniques to enhance your observation skills.
(Adults) 1:30 - 3 pm.
Enjoy an afternoon tea circa 1830 much as Betsey Mason would have with the gleam of polished silver and proper tea etiquette. Sample a menu of tasty treats appropriate to the period in an historic setting as you brush up on your tea history. Includes a tour of Historic Huntley.
(2 - 12 yrs.) 7 - 8 pm.
Bundle up in your jammies and bring blankets to sit on and snuggle in as you listen to stories from long ago the way the Mason family may have once done. Enjoy the sunset and spectacular view from Historic Huntley. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Huntley in the 20th Century
(Adults) 1:00-2:30 pm.
Schemes and Dreams, Subs and Bombers. Meet at Historic Huntley and then car pool to the other side of the park to see first-hand traces of the park's 20th century history, arguably the park's most important time period. Discover the role Huntley played in the nation's defense. Learn about the schemer who accidentally made Huntley Meadows Park possible and the dreamer who defended it. Tour includes a mile stroll on easy ground.
Delicious Dairy at Historic Huntley
(2 - Adults) 11 am - Noon.
Churn your own delicious butter and taste fresh cheese you can make at home. Discover how Huntley, once summer home for the wealthy, became a dairy farm. House tour included.
Wetland at Dusk
(Adults) 8 - 10 pm.
Join park naturalists for a relaxing stroll through the park's forest and wetland paths. Look and listen for wildlife settling down or waking up during the transition of day to night.
Get Ready for Dragonfly Season!
(Adults) 11 am - 2 pm.
Dragonfly season is here! Brush up on your observational skills and learn to identify some common and rare dragonflies and damselflies that live in Huntley Meadows Park.
Nature Detectives
(3 - 5 yrs.) 2 - 3:30 pm.
Naturalist-led class where child and parent explore nature through hikes, stories, songs, hands-on activities and crafts. Topics vary seasonally.
